1.Sulfuric acid introduction
Sulfuric acid (chemical formula: H2SO4) is an inorganic compound, a type of oxyacid, and is the most important oxyacid of sulfur. It holds an extremely important position in industry and is widely used in various production and chemical processes. The major use of sulfuric acid include of chemical manufacturing, metal processing, battery industry, pesticide, drying agent, agricultural and fertilizer.
2.Process introduction of sulfuric acid manufacturing plant
The industrial sulfuric acid production methods mainly involves the contact process and the nitration process.
Contact Process:
Sulfur or pyrite is first burned or roasted in air to produce sulfur dioxide (SO2).
Reaction equation: S+O2→SO2
Or using pyrite: 4FeS2+11O2→8SO2+2Fe2O3
Sulfur dioxide (SO2) is oxidized to sulfur trioxide (SO3), which is a key step in the production of sulfuric acid. This reaction does not actually proceed at room temperature and without a catalyst. The contact process uses vanadium pentoxide (V2O5) supported on diatomite, containing potassium oxide or potassium sulfate (promoters), as a catalyst.
Reaction equation: 2SO2+O2→2SO3
Sulfur trioxide absorbed by 97%~98% H2SO4 and reacts with water to form sulfuric acid (H2SO4).
Reaction equation: SO3+H2O→H2SO4
The contact process is the most commonly used method today because it can produce sulfuric acid with a concentration as high as 98% or more.
Nitration Process:
The nitration process was an early method for producing sulfuric acid and is now basically obsolete. It uses nitrogen oxides as an oxidizing agent to oxidize sulfur dioxide to sulfur trioxide, which then reacts with water to form sulfuric acid. The nitration process is divided into the lead chamber process and the tower process, with the lead chamber process being phased out due to environmental issues.
